Give Your Kids An Intellectual Head Start With Educational Toys

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Toys for children are not limited to boring, cheap plastic dolls, and cars. You can find some wonderful educational toys for a child that will pique their curiosity and challenge their imagination. In order for a toy to be interesting, it must combine learning opportunities with an appearance and ?fun factors? that make it an irresistible magnet for a child. Playtime for children should be a time where they are able to express themselves and expand their knowledge and abilities. Many top products that are designed with an educational point of view are geared to help children develop and refine large and small motor skills and their own innate talents. Music is one of the chief educational entertainment products on the market that can be tailored to suit a person of any age. There are CDs that mothers can play for their babies before they are even born, while others are created for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school age children. Parents will find lots of fun instruments to encourage a love of rhythm and music such as bells, gourd rattles, tambourines, triangles, xylophones, guitars, and drums. Playing and exploring music and musical instruments will help children gain an understanding of rhythms and melodies and listening to music has been linked to better school performance, and higher IQs. Think about some of the things that you, yourself, once found immensely satisfying during your own childhood. Perhaps it was a variety of building blocks that you could use to construct roads, towers, and even entire communities. The excitement that this kind of creative activity produced probably still lingers in your memory today. One of the reasons that blocks are a childhood favorite is because there are no real rules that must be followed. This is also a primary reason that these items are always included in any Top 10 list for educational toy products. Smaller children can play with foam blocks for extra safe fun. Parents of children 3 and older might want to look for a set of blocks made from a sturdier material, such as wood. These will last much longer and they are able to absorb the rough and tumble handling that most small children dish out. Your child will have hours of fun constructing and then demolishing tall, elaborate structures (of their own design) from these blocks . There are even construction sets that contain a variety of building materials for kids, including planks, blocks, slides, and connectors. Rhyming and memory games are also top choices in the educational toy marketplace. These can be purchased as sets of cards, CD programs, and board games. Memorization skills are easily increased when you and your children use these fun toys to add new dimensions to any afternoon or weekend family playtime. There are even washable plastic mats imprinted with key educational facts and ideas that can be used as the basis for some stimulating family table conversation. These colorful mats contain educational resources that will inspire and excite your children. Make meals fun and interesting with these child friendly products. This is a great way to teach younger children about the times tables, countries and capital cities and fun facts about science. All children have an instinctive desire to learn more about the world around them and parents can encourage this natural curiosity by selecting child friendly microscopes, large world globes, topographical floor maps, or even magic sets. Each of these educational toys?is designed to teach children something new about science, and will open their minds to the way they view the world.

Divorced Dads Tips: Getting Information About the Kids

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

DISCLAIMER: The following is NOT legal advice, nor is it a substitute for legal advice. If you are in Family Court you will need legal advice, so please see a lawyer.

Here?s a common problem for divorced dads – Getting Information about the Kids from teachers, doctors and others.

Do you feel you’re being ignored and excluded from crucial events and information in your child’s life because you’re a divorced dad? Do your child’s teachers, coaches, and doctors defer to their mother without consulting you, sending the message that just because you’re divorced, you’ve somehow stopped being a parent?

I can certainly attest to feeling like that.

Despite the fact that I had custody and my kids lived with me full time, I found that teachers ignored my questions, but discussed my kids’ education in depth with their mother. The same went for doctors.

Believe it or not, this is a common problem that divorced dads face whether they are stay-at-home fathers who have custody of their children or whether they are in a situation with no custody agreement.

It may be unfair, but the world tends to have a natural deference to the mother, and the father is often left in the dark.

Don’t despair. There are things you can do.

First of all, I suggest coming to our weekly calls at http://www. DivorcedDadWeekly. com to learn many ways to succeed in getting others to recognize your important role in your child’s life. While it?s not a substitute for legal advice, it is a great way to augment that with practical advice from the perspective of fathers who have already had success in Family Court.

Next, recognize that we do not live necessarily in a fair and just world to begin with. We all long for fairness and want justice, but we do not live in a perfect world. The first step in moving forward is recognizing exactly where you are and defining where you want to be in order to anticipate what your difficulties are going to be and what your strategies is, in order to not make situation worse.

For example, I could have just flipped my lid when those school officials, teachers and doctors treated me like I did not exist. I could have gotten angry, beat my chest, proclaimed my fathers’ rights and threatened to sue. But that would not have gotten me to the other end of the solution I wanted in any way, shape or form. Instead, I would have pigeonholed myself in their opinions as an “angry man”, an impression that, once formed, is very difficult to break.

Instead, I focused on building rapport. When two people have a rapport, the one who is the most consistent on their message and the most emphatic with their message is the one who will win the argument. Staying on point is the key element. If what you truly desire is improvement concerning an aspect of your child’s life, whether it be getting their grades up or deciding on a medical treatment. Stay focused, build rapport, read your audience that you are delivering your message to and stay on point.

If you do these things you cannot fail but to be your child’s best advocate.

During my divorce, I wished for a divorce roadmap. That?s why we created a weekly telewebcast, to help men like yourself.

If you’ve lost in Family Court, don’t give up. There is always hope. You’ve likely lost because you didn?t understand that winning requires effectively “waging peace” for your children.

If you base your game plan and strategies upon those of successful fathers, you will improve your chances of success immeasurably. You need help from dads who have done what you are trying to do.

We can help you learn the successful strategies of fathers who have won in Family Court. Join us on our weekly calls at DivorcedDadWeekly where we will do our best to steer you in the right direction, by sharing with you what has worked for successful divorced dads, so you can be one too.

Kids Love Spyware – Do Your Know if Your Kids are in This Group?

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

So you have a computer which is used by your kids and yourself or try to pay bills or get directions, for most American families a computer purchase is considered to be a great investment because of the many benefits that it brings however, not everyone knows exactly how to take care of it and keep it running smoothly without running into trouble. Most of the time computer problems emerge because of poorly coded software as well as the lack of random access memory, also referred to as RAM.

In a nutshell, the purpose for a computer to have two types of memory (RAM and permanent memory in a hard disk drive) is because it RAM is much faster than a hard drive so all of the applications that you run on a daily basis are loaded into RAM when you first open them for instance, Internet Explorer or Firefox are two popular browsers that when clicked are loaded into RAM memory for fast access, when you have too many programs open you will start to notice a computer gets slower and slower this is due to the fact that when the computer runs out of RAM it starts to use virtual memory which can be placed on the hard drive but since the hard drive is a lot slower than RAM you will notice that there is a lag related to the response times of your applications.

Different computers use and manage RAM in different ways, the main difference is the operating system that it runs. We mention random access memory in order to illustrate the following point, spyware — adware — malware, etc. are all applications that tend to use your RAM and make your computer run slow, not only that but they can gather sensitive information in order to take advantage of your browsing habits.

Kids and teenagers who love instant messaging programs such as the MSN messenger, Yahoo IM, etc. are all prime targets of spyware/adware companies such as Zango. This company distributes their spyware programs by masking them in content that will attract a young audience such as smileys or icons for instant messaging applications, kids and teenagers simply love the thought of customizing their messages and conversations through chat applications and they normally end up downloading software that brings a lot more than just cute icons. Another way that this company distributes their deceptive application is by grabbing videos from popular social video sites such as Youtube and syndicating them in their sites, the only difference is that in order for a person to watch those videos that they have syndicated, the user needs to download and install a software which will allow them to watch the video and as you can imagine the software that is downloaded is not very “user friendly”

The worst part is that once your children or anyone who uses your computer have downloaded such spyware/Adware the application is very hard to get rid of and if you try to erase it with and anti-spyware application you run the risk of ending up without an Internet connection because of the fact that such “programs” change your computer system files. If at this point you wanted to use your computer to get some direction from the web you with quickly notice that you have no Internet connection, and the first thing people do is to blame their old computer because it is too slow when the real problem is that spyware companies such as Zango have altered your system files, loaded applications you did not authorized to be loaded and then when someone tried to remove this harmful application from a computer, all of your functionality went out the window.

So the question remains are you and your kids educated about the risks of downloading “cute applications” from the Web? — remember that your computer (your investment) as well as your personal data is at risk.

Student’s Loans for Education Purposes

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

?
Loans in India are easily available especially for student’s study purpose. The purpose is to help students get themselves educated. The government provides immense support in this regard. Banks and financial institutions are given the guidelines to offer loans to students looking forward to availing of loans. As it is known that education is a costly affair, so it is getting tougher day by day for people to get their kids educated. It is more true in case of higher education. So, more and more people find it hard to meet the higher costs related to education. But without proper education too, people lag behind. In such a situation, it is absolutely important for students to find some sort of a console from some or the other organisation. Banks come as an aide in this regard. Students sometimes think of earning while learning. But, this does not really solve the purpose as they are left exhausted at the end of the day. So, they are no longer in a position to study any more. Moreover, they are found to concentrate more on earning than learning and the result is – no learning at all. Thus, Student education loans prove to be of great help for students who aspire to go for higher education. It is hassle free and banks and other institutions offer the loans very easily. Loans in India that are related to students are of two types. Secured and unsecured loans. Secured loans are the ones where one has to submit a document of income or property in order to avail the loan. Unsecured loans are the ones whereby a student can apply for loans without furnishing any document relating to income source. This type of loans is more feasible for students all over the world. In India too people can avail such an education loan without facing any trouble. Moreover, the repayments of the loans do not start before six months. However, the terms of repayment of the loans is decided by the lender and it differs from lender to lender. Such student’s loan can be applied for ‘online’. Thus, the borrower of the Student education loans can apply for the loan online by simply filling up a form. The student has to give his or her complete details. Once the verification is done to the desired level, the loan is processed and the amount eventually transferred to the bank account of the borrower. Three Questions To Ask Yourself Before You Buy Toys For Your Kids

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

so you can buy a useful toy.

Some toys are over hyped and others that I quite like, are never advertised. When I see new toys or the kid wants something she saw on TV, I usually ask myself “What can this toy be used for” and “How long will it keep the kid interested. ” The last question I sometimes never ask, cause I never get that far is “Does the toy teach anything or does it build imagination or some other characteristic. ”

These three questions, hopefully will give me an idea about the usefulness and longevity of the new toy. If the toy passes the first two questions then it is into the realm of learning. Some toys never make it this far, they are just ornaments. I don’t look at the safety aspect as most toys are safe, but I am careful with little bits and pieces.

For the first question I think about what you can do with the toy. Whether you can play alone or with friends. Can it be used with other toys to do other things, or is it a one hit wonder.

As an example we will use the Star Wars Darth Vader Mask. This little toy is very popular because of the film, but I think its usefulness is very limited. You could use it in pretend play but how long will that last. I would say this type of toy is used for sharing, a sort of play and share toy to see who can come up with the most outrageous line. It is not really the type of toy you could play with by yourself.

For the second question I think this toy would be discarded quite early, as there seems to be very little to keep the kid amused. Once you have said your few lines what do you then. Then again there are all the accessories to buy to go with the mask, like the clothes and boots. The money is in the accessories these days. Unless your kid wants to be an actor I would not get around to asking the third question.

The toys I do like are the LEGOS, the MEGA BLOKS and the PLAYMOBILS that the kids use to build things. Gone are the days when I was young and LEGO was a bucket of bricks that you could make anything with. The only limit was your imagination.

Nowadays imagination has gone out the door to be replaced with an operator’s manual so you get all the bricks and accessories in the right place. They are still fun to do. The finished product is a beautiful crafted masterpiece that usually ends up on top of the piano or coffee table until the cat destroys it.

So far for my kid the max is three times to redo one. So I would say the novelty wears off after three attempts. These toys build finishing ability and teach how to follow a plan. Also they are good for a rainy afternoon as they can take some time to finish. But the downside is they can be very pricey.

For these toys the answer to the first questions would be– the kid can build something. They can see the finished product and match it with the picture to see if it is correct. The next answer would be they can remake it or make there own design. And for the last question I would say the kid should definitely learn something while putting the blocks together.

Using these three questions I somehow manage to buy what I consider to be useful toys. Therefore I am not swamped by the advertising hype or the “Keeping up with the Jones” sort of thing.

7 Things to Teach your Kids About Money

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Did you know that many people retire broke?

It’s true. After a lifetime of hard work and having earned literally hundreds of thousands of dollars, they end up with nothing.

So where did all their hard-earned cash go? The answer is, it passed right through their fingers.

While schools are great at teaching algebra, calculus, and geometry. . . how many of us learned about the basics of personal finance and creating financial security for ourselves?

The truth is, the earlier you learn to handle money, the more likely you are to manage it properly and live a prosperous life.

So why not provide a little home schooling for your family and teach them the basics? Here are 7 important lessons to instill in your kids about money:

1. Save something of what you earn

Acquiring the savings habit is one of the smartest things you can ever do.

If you’re reading this now as a middle-aged parent, imagine how much you’d have in the bank today if you’d saved 10% of everything you’d ever earned.

(It’s almost scary to think about, isn’t it?)

Teach your kids to save a little of everything they earn.

2. Don’t borrow what you can’t pay back

Debt is one of the greatest social diseases of our time. The price to pay for the “have now, pay later” philosophy is that you certainly will pay later.

Debt imprisons you in a job you don’t like, creates stress and anxiety in your life, and erodes your wealth creation program.

You will never become rich while you’re in debt. Period.

Teach your kids the value of delayed gratification. “If in doubt, go without”.

3. To give is to get

Managing money doesn’t mean hoarding it and locking it away in its own purpose-built high security jail. It simply means being careful, spending wisely, and acquiring a regular savings habit.

Teach your kids that donating money to worthwhile causes is a noble thing to do, and that the money returns to you in more ways than you can imagine.

4. Money isn’t evil

“Money is the root of all evil” and “filthy lucre” are phrases you’ll hear banded around.

Ignore them.

Money actually brings enormous good into the world. For example:

- Creating wealth helps create jobs for others

- Investing in business helps to bring solutions into people’s lives by way of innovative products and services

- Acquiring a great fortune allows you to donate more money to charity – or even start your own trust fund

Teach your kids that money is neither good nor bad – it’s what you do with it that makes the difference.

5. If you don’t spend much, you can’t lose much!

One of the oldest wealth-creation maxims is, “It takes money to make money”.

Unfortunately, it also takes money to lose money.

Teach your kids the value of caution when entering into financial affairs. And let them know that many self-made millionaires started with literally nothing.

6. Get the best price for everything you can

Your financial health is really the difference between how much you earn and how much you spend. It therefore makes sense not to pay any more money for something than you have to.

Teach your kids that bargain-hunting doesn’t make you a “miser” – just a sensible individual.

7. The fast buck is your last buck

Sooner or later everyone gets offered a “surefire” method of making a fortune, whether it’s the three-card trick, a once-in-a-lifetime investment plan, or some time-limited business opportunity only available to a select few. . .

Don’t fall for too-good-to-be-true scams.

Teach your kids that wealth creation is a simple and timeless process based on common sense.

If you had learned the above principles when you were 10 years old, and had applied them every day of your life, would you be financially healthier today?

Teach your kids the timeless truths of acquiring and keeping wealth.

Knowledge truly is the most precious gift you can give.

Help Your Kids Choose The Right Toys

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

There are so many kinds of toys for kids nowadays that even the kids themselves have a hard time choosing which toy they like more. Some kids will pick toys based on size while others will choose those with attractive shapes and colors. Some of these choices are not necessarily good for them. Foremost in a kid’s mind when choosing toys is the fun that the toy provides during playtime. Parents must then help their kids choose the right toys by keeping in mind these factors when shopping for toys: 1. Is the toy appropriate for the kid’s age? Kids toy manufacturers indicate their age recommendation on the toy’s box for a reason. Do not ignore this information and get waylaid by your child’s enthusiasm for the toy. If you want your child to improve on certain skills, give him toys that are appropriate for his age. Advanced levels of challenges provided by certain toys can be a source of frustration for your child if the skills needed does not match the child’s stage of development. 2. Does the toy have no removable parts? Safety is the biggest issue when it comes to kids’ toy selection. You should look at a toy as a potential health hazard. Stuffed toys are soft and cute, and most would think that they are the safest toys out there. This is actually a misconception. Stuffed toys, usually animals or dolls, that are intended for children over three years old might have eyes or other accessories that are potential choking hazards for younger kids. Choking hazards include any sewn-on, soft, or small parts that can be bitten off. To be on the safe side, remember this rule of thumb – if the toy is small enough to fit a toilet paper tube, then it is unsafe for children under three years old to play with. 3. Does the kid’s toy help him develop the skills he needs? Toys are not only for entertainment but also for your child’s mind stimulation. Where the child’s mind is stimulated, then there is an opportunity to develop social, emotional, and intellectual skills, among others. Children from age one to three like to have a mobile and tactile playtime. At this stage of development, playtime can indeed be messy because kids are interested in rearranging their environment. They like to empty or transfer objects from one place to another as a way of learning how things work. Construction toys like blocks and stackers are perfect for kids in this age range. So are fit-together toys like shape sorters or simple 3D puzzles featuring familiar shapes like fruits, vegetables, and other objects associated with eating time. For children between three and six years old, pretend play is the name of the game. At this stage of development, children become masters of make believe so give them toys that stimulate their imagination. Little girls will enjoy dollhouses and toy kitchens while young boys will love to have their own set of wheels just like their dads. If your answers to the three questions are YES, then it is safe to assume that the toy is the right one for your kid. When shopping for your kids’ toys, help them choose the right ones by buying only what’s good for them. They can’t always have what they want, but they should have what they need.

The usual and readily available toys with both the aesthetic and intellectual aspects are puzzles of various types like picture puzzles, logic puzzles and simple mathematical problems. There are also educational toys like construction and tool box sets, flash cards, stacking alphabet cubes, and types of sorting toys among others. After gaining a thorough picture of the child’s mental capacities, which also involves the correct identification of the weaknesses and the strengths of a child, the next step is to decide on the approach the parents might want to take. It is also important to note that parents are able to familiarize with the distinction between weakness and strengths versus preferred and undesired toys for kids. There is a thin line between them, although most of the times they go in parallel, that is, those that children enjoy the most are their strengths and those they dislike are their weakness. Yet, parents should always be sharp enough on their kid’s behavior. It is sensible that parents spend time with their children while playing in order to see whether a child plays a specific toy for their colors or for the toy’s shapes or if the children enjoy the tactile sensation they get with these toys. Moreover, there are kids that enjoy toys for the pleasure of solving them unmindful of how these things look. Also, there are children that like both the color in particular, together with the challenges these toys present. It is up to the parents now to identify the case of their children. An alternative to consider is treating weaknesses and strengths distinct from other factors, hence striking with different approaches. Is it to develop the strengths and uphold the idea of mastering the field a child is good at? Is it to fill in the child’s weak points? Or is it by striking a balance between both the strengths and the weakness? The last option is the most difficult thing to do since we are dealing with toddlers here, who at most of the times would opt for their desired toys disregarding those aimed develop their weaknesses, yet not enjoyable enough to play with. Whichever options you want to take for your children, it should top your priority that these toys for kids are appropriate for them. Giving them exactly what they need and not forcing them to gadgets which you think will suite them better regardless of how they feel towards these things.
